How to Choose Accounting Services

November 27, 2009

From startupnation.com

Before you launched your own business, keeping track of your finances and doing your own taxes was probably a cinch. Easy-to-use bookkeeping software such as Microsoft Office Accounting, Quicken and QuickBooks helps you keep control while doing it yourself.

Like many entrepreneurs trying to shepherd an expanding enterprise, it might now make sense to turn over tax, accounting and other financial chores to outside specialists. Choosing the right type of accounting services, however, is an important decision. The right accounting assistance can lift a tremendous burden off your shoulders.

They'll collect coupons for everything...

"My best piece of marketing for the business was a voucher code," says Pearson. "I put out the code to test out the concept of viral marketing and it was really popular. People were sending it to their friends and friends of friends. I thought, "That's hot! It's my cheapest marketing tool and it's bringing in the most sales. That was my first venture into discount codes."

For an online company, internet marketing is important. But even for brick and mortar companies, even those who don't sell anything online but rather cater to local customers, internet marketing can expand the business and give the company more exposure locally. If you own a small company that relies on local business alone rather than the ability to take orders online from all over the country or all over the world, don't discount the power of internet marketing.

The Importance of Site Performance

Site Performance: The Need for Speed

In a 2006 study on site abandonment (.pdf) conducted by Jupiter Research on behalf of Akamai, 28% of online shoppers claimed they would not wait longer than 4 seconds for a page to load before leaving a site. This equated to 33% of broadband customers and 19% of dialup. Though broadband customers had higher expectations for page load speed, even 45% of dialup users were unwilling to wait more than 6 seconds for a page to load.

Infinite Endcaps in Cyberspace

If there's one thing I think we can all agree on, it's that online retailers and product manufacturers want to sell more stuff. So it stands to reason that retailers and manufacturers would do all they can to put video on their sites, right? If only that was the case!

We all believe video increases sales conversion rates. Yet adoption lags. In a September post, Justin suggested the lag is due to a lack of leadership. While that may be the case, I think there are number of factors in play. The one that has been on my mind is the question of who pays?

Meatball Sundae: Is Your Marketing out of Sync?

Godin's latest business handbook (after Small Is the New Big and The Dip) revisits some of his most popular marketing advice, while emphasizing that it can't just be applied willy-nilly. In past decades, he says, companies were able to get rich by making average products for average people, but those markets have long since been sewn up; mass is no longer achievable [or] desirable. Rather than simply rely on mass media to raise product visibility, New Marketing treats every aspect of interacting with customersincluding customer service and the product itselfas an opportunity to grow the organization.

Small businesses use Web to bring in customers
Grader Jewelers, with showrooms in Groton, Norwich and Waterford, and Flavours of Life, a Fair Trade store in New London, use their store Web sites for very different reasons: the latter to develop an international community around fair trade products; the former, to market unique lines of jewelry.

But both are striving to drive customer traffic on their Web sites back to their brick-and-mortar stores.

They find that staying ahead of technology complements a deep-seated belief in business Web sites as online manifestations of their storefronts that are integral to the health of their businesses.

As an Online Or "Brick & Mortar" Business Owner,
What Are Your Most Valuable Assets?

It amazes me that many business owners when asked what their most valuable asset is, will answer with something like; my building, my machines, my employees etc. The real answer is my Customer Data Base and my Prospect or mailing list, without which there is no reason to be in business. The simple truth is that the basis of all businesses is selling; the basis of selling is finding a need and fulfilling that need, if you have no customers or prospects then there are no needs.

What Banner Ads Can Learn From Billboards
by Kim Stearns
Published on July 21, 2009

Banner ads are tried-and-true forms of advertising that can deliver great results while driving a return on investment. So why are advertisers so hesitant to use them?
Maybe it's because they have been overrun with cheesy, annoying, misleading, and downright dumb content, creating an aversion to this otherwise effective form of advertising.
We've all seen those silly flashing ads across the top of our favorite websites that promise a free iPod when you choose which brand of fast-food French fries you prefer. But who actually clicks on those things anymore? It's a shame that such an important online-advertising avenue has been tainted for so long with such content... read full article

Secrets to eBay Success

Do you sell on eBay, or are you interested in profiting from this business powerhouse? Here's some tips and tricks:

  1. Research what you intend to sell. For pricing, check online stores, and completed auctions on eBay. You also might want to check eBay to see how many auctions there were that didn't go to completion; if many items went unsold, pick another item to sell.
  2. To avoid paying larger fees to eBay and entice buyers to bid, use a low starting bid. Weigh this against how popular the item is; if you don't expect much traffic, set the starting bid closer to your minimum desired price.
  3. Avoid using reserves, and instead set your starting bid to your minimum price. Reserves discourage bidding.
  4. Set up your auctions to end on Sunday evening around 9pm EST. Historically, auctions ending near this time have done better.
  5. Don't offer free shipping unless many other sellers in your category do so. It usually doesn't attract more bidders. Just set a reasonable shipping price.
  6. More tips and tricks...
